About Hope for Our Children

Two children took the courage to ask their parents for a simple bicycle in the late 70's in one of the West African countries. It saddened the hearts of the couple knowing that they could never buy even a tire of a bike from their bi-weekly salary. The gentleman sat the kids on his thighs with his arm around them. Rubbing his head lightly to theirs, he murmured, "you will have a bike." Immediately he added that there was not enough money, but he planned to win a lottery. Their mother instead, with a basal knowledge of God, told them to save every coin given to them as gift rather than buying ice-creams and to pray always to God. They were so thrilled about what mami and papi said that they jumped off of their father to go spread the good news to the other kids. "Father will buy us a bicycle!" Notwithstanding the reassurance of their mother, "by the grace of God next year you will be riding your bike."

Many Christmases passed, lotteries were not won, their coins were spent and regathered over and over again. By the early 90's, they had become teenagers with a successful father and new siblings in the family. The young siblings were no different from their elder brother and sister. They also asked for a two-wheeler. This time not only could the man afford to buy for his younger kids but he could purchase also for his teenagers who had desired a bike for almost all of their young lives. Unfortunately, the two siblings did not receive the news with excitement. They had been waiting for too long. One of them had long dismissed the idea of having a bike, while the other had high hopes and had tried sometimes to learn how to ride from friends.

Hmm…I nearly forgot what I was telling you. I was a little bit distracted by the memories of these sweet little kids who lived at the Burma camp. Actually, what I wanted to say is this—with all the different kinds of hopes, only one is solid and valid— Christ, "the author and finisher of our faith(Heb 12:2)". Let us hope in his love. “Greater love has no man that he lay than his life for his friends”(John 15:13). He is Emanuel and he is with us through the journey "until the end of age." If we follow his footprints we will not loose our way. Thus says the LORD: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it" (Jeremiah 6:16). We can be guided by nothing but his spirit, sharing light on our way. He offers to carry our burdens, if only we would let him—no specifications of our load. All burdens are burdens whether small or big—a portmanteau size or a briefcase size. God is faithful in his promises—for the promises of God find their yes in him ( 2 Corinthians 1:20). His divine providence, his sovereignty—holding all things under his control. May our hope in the Lord strengthen us to be firm until that bright new day when we see and dwell in the Imperishable City.
